Battlefield Education offers one standard day tour package. This allows us to differentiate with other battlefield tour providers in a sense that we are able to provide our tour participants with a more detailed background and in-depth stories of events.
As every tour (in our opinion) merits a specific approach, depending on the participants, we prefer that you contact us to enquire and discuss possibilities beforehand.
PRIVATE TOUR - MARKET GARDEN
Focus on the 82nd Airborne Division in the "Rijk van Nijmegen" and actions taken in order to achieve its mission.
“The mission assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division was to seize the long bridge over the Maas (Meuse) River at Grave, to seize and hold the high ground in the vicinity of Groesbeek, to seize at least one of the four bridges over the Maas-Waal canal, and finally to seize the big bridge over the Waal (Rhine) at the city of Nijmegen.”
09:00 - 09:30
Together we discuss the link up point where we first meet. Preferably in the Grave / Overasselt region. Here your guide introduces the day and will start with creating situational awareness of the situation in September 1944.
09:30 - 11:00
The next stop in the tour is the replica glider at Groesbeek. From this place a clear oversight is provided on one of the dropzones that the 82nd Airborne Division used. Next to it, the guide will elaborate more on the situation on the ground and the leadership shown by the Divisional Commander James Gavin.
11:00 - 12:30
From the dropzones it is a small tour towards the Vrijheidsmuseum in Groesbeek. Here you have the time to discover the museum in your own pace.
12:30 - 13:30
Whether you arrange your own lunch or hand it over to Battlefield Education, it is time for a well deserved break.
ROAD TO THE BRIDGES
13:30 - 14:30
After the lunch we focus on the actions taken to capture the bridges whereby the Waalbridge merits special attention. Next to it, situational understanding is created by showing what happened in the whole perimeter around Nijmegen.
14:30 - 15:30
Walking over the new "De Oversteek" ("The Crossing") bridge allows you to understand width and strength of the Waal river that the Americans had to cross under fierce German resistance.
15:30 - 16:00
In order remember what happened we pay a moment of respect at the monument dedicated to the men who got killed during the crossing.
We close the day with a traditional Dutch military tradition. What that is? Come figure it out!
